Wale addressed being referred to as a back pack rapper and/or an internet rapper on his Back to the Feature mix tape – and did it well, I might add. But I don’t think that his answering his critics mitigated any of the perceived stigma around the fact that his renown is inextricably linked to websites and the tubes that tie them together. Of course, the fact that Wale was able to make a pretty big noise in the DC rap scene, even garnering some major airplay, should hush those whisperers. It hasn’t, though. But whatever. Wading through the dredges of mix tape culture reveals a great deal about the industry and what individual performers actually want outta all of this. For some, it becomes plainly clear that a chance at the big time only to gain those physical trappings of life is the aim. And while Wale (Olubowale Victor Akintimehin) might want a bit of fame and some of those possessions, a listen to his latest mix tape, Back to the Feature, is a basic statement of substance over matter.
