Alright. I know this isn’t brand new any more, but moving across the country has precluded me from gettin’ this in here. But now, all of you Lone Catalyst fans may commence rejoicing as your favorite mid west emcee/producer, J Rawls, is back with a batch of tracks cooked up throughout the nation as he toured working to spread his name and the fact that he’s actually a skillful dude in a general sense. Rap fans probably should have already been aware of the fact, because prior to this tape – and his other solo work – this guy right here was already puttin’ it down. Read more

Wale: Back to the Figures

Wading through the dredges of mix tape culture reveals a great deal about the industry and what individual performers actually want outta all of this. For some, it becomes plainly clear that a chance at the big time only to gain those physical trappings of life is the aim. And while Wale (Olubowale Victor Akintimehin) might want a bit of fame and some of those possessions, a listen to his latest mix tape, Back to the Feature, is a basic statement of substance over matter. It comes through on every beat – a great deal proffered by 9th Wonder – and every rhyme. Read more

Pugslee Atomz: Goes Driving

PugsPugsBeing figured as an integral part of any cities rap scene – it’s DNA, perhaps – while still showing up at performances simply as a fan speaks volumes about an emcee. Chicago hip hop isn’t the most well known in the country, maybe there’s reason for that – it might be Common’s tight pants and vests at this point. But maybe not. Pugslee Atomz, though, helped found the Nacrobats crew, which in its heyday included rappers, breakers, graf writers and deejays. And during sporadic crew performances it could have been considered the physical embodiment of hip hop. Read more

Jo Well Stars as a Lion

1 New Comment: Join In!

An AntidoteAn AntidoteRace plays as much a part in hip hop as any other genre. It's not to say that that's right or wrong - everyone has some preconceived notions about other people as a result of interactions or experiences. And who knows, if you cross the street one night 'casue of all of that, it might save your life. Or not. Either way, it seems as if Jo Well hasn't been afforded the same sort of hype or press as other newish emcees of a darker complection. Of course the new West Coast rap cognoscenti, led by Blu, is rife with talent that not too many folks have. But a different shade of brown has and always will be an integral part of hip hop culture. It's a universal medium at this point - and it should be all inclusive. Asher Roth, though, might on occasion, think about keeping his mouth shut. Read more

Nero: Emperor

If not for the grace of IllRoots, I wouldn’t have any idea who Nero was. In an ever more startling confluence of web-geek and musician, the hip hop site has paired with emcee Nero to bring out Alive and Vibrant. The disc’s title alone points to the approach that the young emcee (pun not intended) takes towards the music. Additionally, that mix tape is due out on the 20th of this month. And I would assume that it’s not a coincidence. Read more
